European Union to co-fund latest GlobalConnect digitalization project in Northern Scandinavia

GlobalConnect has received 1,1 million Euros in funding from European Union CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) to establish a new wavelength optical network between Norway and Sweden, catering to the continued digitalization of Northern Scandinavia. The project will provide new digital routes between Sweden, Norway and Europe and will increase the capacity and robustness of the digital infrastructure in the region.

Improved infrastructure between Norway and Sweden is an important enabler for the continued digitalization of Northern Scandinavia and it will enhance the digital collaboration between the two neighboring countries. The infrastructure will also cater to the growing regions capabilities of attracting global tech investments, as higher digital accessibility and better conditions for digital services will make it more attractive for companies to establish, operate and develop in the region.

“Increased robustness and capacity improvements are important factors for the continued digitizing of this expanding region. This new infrastructure will not only benefit local businesses, municipalities and the public sector but will also strengthen the bi-lateral defense efforts in the region. We are grateful for the support given by the European Union to co-fund this project which will be a strong digital uplift for the entire region”, says Martin Lippert, Group CEO GlobalConnect.

The new infrastructure will run from Stockholm via Sundsvall to Luleå to Northern Norway, connecting important mining operations and Norwegian harbors, and from Trondheim to Sundsvall. From Sundsvall, the infrastructure will continue southwards to Stockholm and be connected to GlobalConnect’s already existing fiber network reaching all Nordic countries and Germany. The project will start in early 2024, costs 2,2 million Euros and is expected to be finalized in 2026.

This project is co-funded by the European Union.
